Lockdown history
As the owner of a thriving steakhouse in Brighton, I kept a diary of the major lockdown events.
Looking online, there was not a single source that gave the whole story, so you have to look at HMRC, local councils and government websites to get it.
For your comfort and convenience, I’ve summarised the history below.
23/03/2020: first lockdown. Furlough began.
01/04/2020: zero business rates introduced and council grants applications open.
04/05/2020: bounce back scheme launched.
04/07/2020: lockdown lifted.
15/07/2020: VAT reduced to 5%.
03/08/2020: 4 weeks eat out to help out, 50% off – maximum £10 per person.
05/11/2020:2nd lockdown.
23/12/2020: lockdown lifted.
06/01/2021:3rd lockdown.
16/04/2021: lockdown lifted for outdoor dining.
19/05/2021: lockdown lifted for indoor dining.
01/07/2021: business rates increased to 66%.
13/09/2021: furlough ended, VAT increased to 12.5%
31/10/2021: 4th lockdown.
02/12/2021: lockdown lifted.
31/03/2022: VAT 20%, 100% business rates.
Looking back, it was a tumultuous time and God knows how so many of us got through it.
Following a long catering career in many different arenas, I opened my restaurant, “The Old Bank“ in Brighton in 2010. I sold it in March 2022 in order to devote my time to a new service for restaurants called “Restaurant Guru.
Through this, I want to use the experience I’ve gained over the years to help other restaurateurs achieve financial success and personal happiness.
